The Greystone has been notified by Wine Spectator magazine that it has received their 2009 "AWARD OF EXCELLENCE" for the quality of its wine list. The Greystone is the only restaurant in the entire Columbia Valley to be recognized with this award and it speaks volumes about the restaurant's dedication to providing its patrons with a truly well thought out selection of wines that not only pair well with their menu, but also fit within a certain price point.
Wine Spectator is regarded world -wide as a central authority on wines and wine lists. A Wine Spectator award is highly coveted in metropolitan areas where competition among restaurants is intense. For Greystone owner, Mark Strosahl, it is a personal achievement, validating his belief in the power of a distinctive, Washington wine centric wine list.
Since buying the Greystone in 2002, Strosahl has worked very hard to put quality wines front and center at the restaurant. This is only the second year he has submitted his wine list for consideration. What is even more distinctive is that there is not a restaurant in Walla Walla on the 2009n Wine Spectator list.
The Wine Spectator restaurant wine list awards are given in three categories ; the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. The Award of Excellence is given for lists that offer "a well-chosen selection of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style." Such lists generally offer at least 100 selections and the Greystone list contains 485 wines.
In Washington, there were two Grand Award winners (Canlis, Wild Ginger), 13 Best of Awards and only 53 restaurants state-wide with an Award of Excellence. In Eastern Washington, only six restaurants were recognized- one in Wenatchee, one in Ellensburg, three in Spokane and the Greystone in Yakima.
