April Winery Spotlight: Kana Winery

For decades sun-seekers have trekked to the Yakima Valley to experience sunshine, natural beauty, and wine.  It’s been within the past several years that visitors have learned of the simple, eclectic community that is downtown Yakima. The downtown wine scene offers music and entertainment making Yakima an ideal base for exploring the region’s wine country with half-a-dozen hotels and restaurants within walking distance of the wineries.

Kana Winery, located in the historic Larson Building in downtown Yakima. Local physician, Dr. Palmer Wright, launched Kana Winery in 2002 but not merely as a testimony for his love of wine, he also pays tribute to his lifetime enjoyment of the rock band The Grateful Dead. The wines, several of which have Grateful Dead themes, are primarily Rhône-style blends, using varietals such as syrah, mourvèdre, grenache, cinsault and counoise.

A few non-Rhône varietal wines such as their tempranillo, chardonnay, riesling, amongst others, can also be found in this endearing 1930’s tasting room.

After trying to educate my palate to my own taste in wine,I happened upon a bottle of Kana at a Seattle distributor.I think It was 2006 ,I thought I would be able to find a case or more to turn my friend’s and family on to the experience I had.Still searching to duplicate that epic epiphany.

      Hi Steven,

I am so sorry for such a delayed response. My best suggestion would be to contact the winery directly as they could either sell you the wine direct or point you in the right direction for retailers that carry their wines. The manager, Katherine, can be reached at manager@kanawinery.com. The winery phone number is 509-453-6611.
