Changes to the Sales Tax Exemption starts next Monday

Effective July 1st retail sales tax exemption for qualified nonresident consumers will no longer be available. Now consumers will need to save their receipts and request a refund directly from the Washington Department of Revenue.

What does this mean for direct to consumer wine sales? In the past residents from states that were exempt from paying sales tax (think Oregon) could purchase their wine tax free. That is no longer the case. Now wineries will need to charge everyone from qualifying states retail sales tax. See the full list of states in the link below.
