Get a jump on your holiday wine purchases

One of the most important and most challenging aspects of any holiday meal is the wine choice. Finding a wine that pleases the palates of your guests and pairs well with the food can be a daunting task.

Getting outside advice on holiday wine pairing is a good strategy and easy to do since we live in wine country. Another great rule; don’t wait until the last minute.  Many local wineries are offering holiday discounts during this time of year. It’s a great opportunity to visit, taste, and purchase wines for the upcoming season.

It makes sense to offer at least one red and one white wine at Thanksgiving, or Christmas for that matter.  Pinot Noir, and lightly oaked Chardonnay are often cited as excellent options. Other wines that pair with sides and desserts include Riesling, Ports, lighter reds and of course Sparkling wines. Following are a handful of promotional discounts for the holidays.

During the month of November, Owen Roe is offering a 6pk of their Sharecropper’s label for just $86.40. This pack includes a bottle of 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2016 Merlot, 2017 Red Blend, 2016 Chardonnay, 2017 Pinot Noir and 2016 Syrah.  If you are looking for an impactful gift, Owen Roe has beautiful Magnums (1.5L bottle) available.

Wit Cellars is offering 30% off a before and after dinner 3-pack. This trio of wines includes 2016 Petit Verdot Port Style Port, 2015 Late Harvest Riesling, and 2018 Sparkling Pinot Grigio. Wit’s 2017 Chardonnay is 30% off a case while supplies last. This is a lighter Chardonnay with great acidity making it the perfect wine for Thanksgiving. It won’t last long, take a day trip to Prosser and pick yours up.

The beauty of a blend is the variance in style, weight and flavors. Wilridge Vineyard, Winery & Distillery’s 2015 Estate Melange Noir, a Bordeaux red, is available for just $30 per bottle for the season. Take an hour to go taste and see if the flavors of this wine fit your meal plans.  While there, check out the offerings at the bar – you may find all you need in one place.

If it is Cabernet Sauvignon you have your eye on, Portteus Winery is offering a two for one (2 for $24) sale on their regular 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon thru the holidays. If you are serving prime rib or lamb this may be the perfect wine for the table. A visit to the tasting room to taste and chat about the wine will help you make the right decision for the holidays.
