05 Mar Winery Spotlight ~ Hightower Cellars
Established in 1997, Hightower Cellars is located on 15 acres, high on Red Mountain. Owners Tim and Kelly Hightower run the entire winemaking process from start to finish. They live on the land, care for the vines and produce exceptional wines. The winery is surrounded by its estate vineyard—Out of Line Vineyard, which produces cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, malbec and petit verdot. Hightower Cellar’s grapes are handpicked and hand-sorted to ensure the use of only the best grapes from some of the best vineyards in dry Eastern Washington. The couple produces wine in small quantities and sells them to just a handful of select markets across the United States.
Best Bottle to Bring Home:
The Red Mountain AVA is a sub-appellation of the Yakima Valley. This small, burgeoning wine region is becoming a hot-spot for new vineyards. Red Mountain grapes—mostly Bordeaux and Rhône varietals—are among the most expensive and the source of an endlessly growing list of 90+ scoring wines.
